I just finished up Season Three of Netflix’s House of Cards. Don’t worry, I’m not here to spill any spoilers. As you can imagine, Frank and Claire Underwood and team are up to plenty of shenanigans and schemes. One line in particular stood out to me as a FICTION writer and creator. It really honed in on the courage creative liberties require.
As I tackle editing, rewrites, etc., I’m realizing how lame and boring playing it safe can be for a story and its characters. I had tried to create something that could potentially speak to many and not offend anyone, because I thought it might sell more. Driven by fear, I initially put together a very “vanilla” story…today it’s more rocky road.
*knock knock*
